Ian Thomas was appointed President of Boeing India in January 2007.  He is responsible for leading Boeing's enterprise-wide India team, strengthening the company’s local presence, and finding new ways to pursue growth and productivity initiatives.  He is based in New Delhi and reports to Shep Hill, President of Boeing International.

Prior to this appointment, Thomas served as Vice President of Europe, for Boeing's Integrated Defense Systems (IDS).  He was the senior director for the region and led all efforts to secure new business.

From 2002 to 2005, he served as Vice President, Business Development, leading Boeing's defense activities in the United Kingdom.  Prior to that, he served as director of International Policy for Boeing's Military Aircraft and Missile Systems division in St. Louis, Missouri.  He joined The Boeing Company in 2001.

From 1997 to 2001, he served as assistant to the Director of NATO Policy in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense and as special assistant to the Principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. Prior to those assignments, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge and, for a brief period, with the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles, in Brunei, Borneo.  In the late 1980s, he was a member of the Naval Forces and Arms Control Study Group at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) in Stockholm, Sweden.

Thomas is an authority on U.S.-allied security relations in NATO-Europe and on the security policies and programs of the United States and its key allies in Europe and Asia.  He has written extensively on the post-Cold War transformation of the United States military. His publications include: The Promise of Alliance: NATO and the Political Imagination

Thomas is a recipient of the Exceptional Public Service medal, awarded by the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense.  During his time in the UK, Thomas served on the Executive Council of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and on the Aerospace Advisory Board at the University of Cranfield.  He is a Companion of the Royal Aeronautical Society.  In 2004, he was named a Young Leader by the French-American Foundation.  He currently serves as a board member of the US-India Business Council (USIBC).  He is also a member of the Special Forces Club in London. 

Thomas holds a master’s degree in international relations and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Cambridge, a graduate degree in social sciences from the University of Stockholm, and a bachelor’s degree (cum laude) in history from Amherst College.
