Kiran Bedi
Social activistRetired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer
Kiran Bedi is a true inspiration as a social activist and retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. She became the first woman to join the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972, and was last posted as Director General , BPR&D (Bureau of Police Research and Development, Ministry of Home Affairs). She took voluntary retirement from IPS in December, 2007.
During her service, her prison reform policies at Tihar Jail - one of the world’s largest prisons (with over 10,000 inmates) - lead to her winning the 1994 Ramon Magsaysay Award. Subsequently, she has founded two NGOs in India: Navjyoti for rural development, women empowerment, education and welfare, and India Vision Foundation for prison reforms, drug abuse prevention and child welfare.
Her insights are likely to inspire the best of business leaders to reflect on their contribution to the community and initiate a positive change for the social environment in India.
